The Value of Mentors in the Workplace
Employers
and employees may not realize the value of mentors in the workplace. Mentors can positively influence another individual by sharing skills, values and
experiences.
The term mentor means different things to
different people. In some cases, a
mentoring relationship may last for years, while in other situations it may be
a very brief but enriching encounter. Every company has seasoned
employees who have a wealth of knowledge and skills surrounding their job or
the business that could be passed on to employees who have not been in the
business as long. Are you utilizing the wealth of knowledge you have on
staff, having veterans contribute to the growth of the newer, less seasoned
employees? Make sure your mentors possess confidence in their abilities,
an interest in other people’s growth and a desire to positively influence
others. You may find that the mentors
revitalize their interest in their own work through helping young entrepreneurs
and their energy.
Whether you are someone in need of a mentor or someone in a position to become a mentor, both can be very rewarding learning experiences.
